Discussion starters:

  • Who is the protagonist in this story?

  • Dickson opens her argument by stressing how important it is "to see the inter-relationships between the character in the objective world and the character in his private, subjective world (7).  How would you define these two worlds and which characters move between them?

  • Kobler notes the use of a limited stream-of-consciousness technique in this story (22);  where do you find that occurring and what is its practical effect?

  • Like many modernist stories an inexperienced reader will find herself/himself frustrated with the lack of plot in this story?  How would you respond to someone who asks what this story is "about"?
