Generic Policies

• Homework may be assigned daily, except before exams.  Each student should expect to present problems at the board or other forms of recitation (presentations, projects, etc.) at least twice during the term.  Each such presentation/recitation/etc. may be graded.
• Assignments which are required to be turned in, shall be turned in on-time or they will not receive credit.  Assignments shall be done to the prescribed requirements or they will not receive credit.  The instructor may relax this conditions for arbitrary reasons.
• Quizzes will be administered on a regular basis, generally weekly, at a regular time to be announced.  There will be no make ups for missed quizzes, however, some of the quiz grades will be dropped.
• Exams will include at least a Mid-term and a Final examination.  The Final Examination will be comprehensive. (Other exams may be scheduled at the discretion of the instructor.)
• Grading will be accomplished by using one of two grading approaches based on the type of course and content: 1) cluster grading weighting methodology which groups major grades in descending order and applies descending weights to be announced. This methodology somewhat reduces the impact of a single bad result, but has no effect on sustained excellent performance or sustained inferior performance, and 2) contract grading which involves completing assignments defined in WUPs (Work Unit Plans) on time and at designated quality.  Individual assignments are graded on a 5 point scale with 3 being satisfactory.  Sustained performance at the 3 level is a C.  To obtain a B or an A requires sustained performance at levels higher than 3.
• Attendance is important and will be taken each class period.  You are expected to attend all class sessions.  If you miss class for illness or emergency, you are responsible for getting the material you missed.  If you expect to be excused for your absence you must send the instructor an email describing the reason you were absent.  A deduction from your grade, up to a total of 20%, may be progressively exacted for unexcused absences beyond the first three.  Extreme absenteeism may result in a failed grade for the course.
• Honor and Responsibility are the hallmarks of integrity.  Work that you turn in must be your own work.  Assignments are to be performed solely by the student, although consulting with other students on general concepts and support (ex. programming environment, operating system, syntactic or semantic features of language, etc.) is encouraged.  On some projects or exercises collaboration may be allowed or even be part of the assignment.  In the case of collaboration, the names of all the students collaborating on an assignment are to be included in the work turned in.  If you are in any doubt about sharing work consult the instructor.  In particular, it is not acceptable to share program code in any way unless explicitly directed to do so.
