MATH 200 S05

Week 4 Class 3 to Week 8 Class 1

Week 4 Class 3

Section 5.1 What is Probability? (164-173)

1. What is probability? Definitions

2. Some Examples from everyday experience.

Assignment:

1. Read section 5.1 closely and read ahead in section 5.2

2. Do at least five of the eleven problems from 173 to 175.

Week 5 Class 1

Class 3 Section 5.2 Some Probability Rules and Compound Events — Part 1

1. We will cover the rules in this class for computing the probabilities of general compound events, those involving independent or mutually exclusive events, and computing conditional probabilities.

Assignment:

1. Study section 5.2 closely.  Go over all the examples in the main text and try some of the 20 problems between pages 188 and 192.  Don't worry too much if they prove difficult.  We will try to go over examples in some detail in the next class.

Week 5 Class 2

Section 5.2 (Continued)

1. We continue with Section 5.2 doing examples.  We will complete the section in this class.

2. Statistics Project Announcement

Assignment:

1. Do more of the problems between pages 188 and 192.

2. Read ahead in Section 5.3 ¾ See how much you can understand on your own.  Go over some of the guided exercises, perhaps Exercise 10 and 11 pages 194 and 197.

Week 5 Class 3

COMPREHENSIVE TEST Chapters 1 through Chapter 5.2

Week 6 SPRING BREAK

Week 7 Class 1

Section 5.3 Trees and Counting Techniques — Part 1

1. Section 5.3 Trees and Counting Techniques

Assignment:

1. Study section 5.3 and strive to do as many of the 22 problems on pages 204 through 206.

Week 7 Class 2

Section 6.1 Introduction to Random Variables and Probability Distributions

1. Quiz on Section 5.3

2. (212-225) Section 6.1 Introduction to Random Variables and Probability Distributions

Assignment:

1. Do problems 1 through 12 pages 221-225 ¾ try to do them all.  At least do the odd numbered ones with answers in the back of the book.  If you have problems with them, try to formulate questions to ask in class that we can address in making the material clearer

Week 7 Class 2

Section 6.2 Binomial Probabilities

1. Section 6.2 Binomial Probabilities

Assignment:

1. There are 17 problems on pages 234 to 235 — work through a sample, at least the odd numbered ones.  Only by actually doing problems do you actual measure your own understanding, so do enough to convince yourself that you understand the ideas.

Week 7 Class 3

Section 6.3 Additional Properties of the Binomial Distribution

1. Section 6.3 Additional Properties of the Binomial Distribution

Assignment:

1. Don't forget that your Statistics Project Problem Statement is due on Friday.  It should be about one page: 1) Brief Statement of Problem, 2) Brief Description of Problem, 3) Optional, but recommended, List of resources for addressing the problem (data sources, Excel spreadsheets, etc. – whatever you think will be useful in addressing the problem.)

2. There are 9 problems on pages 242-245 — work through a sample, at least the odd numbered ones.

3. Study of QUIZ on Chapter 6 for next time.

Week 8 Class 1

Section 7.1 Graphs of Normal Distribution

1. Section 7.1 Graphs of Normal Distribution — Part 1

2. STATISTICS PROBLEM STATEMENT DUE -- just a brief description

3. Expect a QUIZ on Chapter 6 Binomial Probability Distribution

Assignment

1. There are 15 problems on pages 268 to 272.  Divide the problems up by the concept tested and do at least two for each concept.  If you have difficulty with a particular concept then do more problems and review how you are doing.  You are the best judge of your own understanding.
