Week 9

Class 1 Monday October 29, 2007

9.1 We are starting to read G.K. Chesterton’s Orthodoxy.  Read through section III The Suicide of Thought for Monday.  Chesterton wrote Orthodoxy in 1908.  We’ll listen to Dale Ahlquist introduce Chesterton and talk a little about him.  We’ll also review the results of the The Great Debate brainstorming session and focus in on how the debate will work.  What the roles and assignments will be.

Class 2 Wednesday October 31, 2007

9.2  The adventure of reading Orthodoxy continues. For Wednesday you should read sections IV The Ethics of Elfland, V The Flag of the World and VI The Paradoxes of Christianity.   Reading Chesterton should be a romp.  Look for his famous use of paradoxes to illustrate his points.

Class 3 Friday November 2, 2007

9.3 Finish reading Orthodoxy and start thinking about what part of it you will focus on for your Orthodoxy engagement reflective essay due next week.  The last sections of Orthodoxy are VII The Eternal Revolution, VIII The Romance of Orthodoxy, and IX Authority and the Adventurer.

9.3.1 Don’t forget to turn in your electronic copy of your third Essay Adventure.  Also don’t forget that you should have hardcopy to turn in on Monday.

9.3.2 Prepare a list of points at least three of agreement and three of disagreement or at least things that you found interesting and debatable in Chesterton.  How would you engage Chesterton in dialog if he were here to discuss these points?  Bring your ideas to class on Monday so we can talk about that great (in more ways than one) journalist and essayist.
