Plan of Week
Week 6
General ASSIGNMENT for Week: The Library Mission — you should select a great person from either the list of the authors of the great books, or ask me about a person you would like to do. You must clear your person with me — I don’t want duplicates because you’re going to be doing a 2 minute talk on your person on October 27th, “Great Conversation Day.” It needs to be a well known person because the assignment is associated with using the research librarians and the library. The handouts were given to you on Friday last week!
Class 1 Monday October 2, 2006
1. Video of The Hero’s Journey
2. Take notes so you have something to reflect on when you do the assignments.
ASSIGNMENT: Get
started as early as possible on The Library Mission. Slack Right!
I’d like you to reflect on the Hero’s Journey in your Reflective
Journals and think about the fact that each of you are the hero’s of your own
journey. Often the role of a hero is
thrust upon them, but also often the hero sets out first on a long journey of
preparation. You are in your formative
years. How are you preparing for your
role in life?
Class 2 Wednesday October 4, 2006
1. A brief discussion of the role of heroes and the Hero’s Journey and then,
2. We’ll go over to the Community Service Fair in the KCC Lounge
ASSIGNMENT: Talk to at least three organizations at the Community Service Fair and get the full story of what they do and how they do it and what kind of help they need. Take notes and be prepared to discuss the three you visited and which one you found the most interesting. Write your notes up on paper neatly to hand in.
Class 3 Friday October 6, 2006
1. Richard Feynman — “The Pleasure of Finding Things Out” — one of my heroes.
PICKUP: Your essay on The Library Mission 750 to 1200 words — your one page report on the meeting with the reference librarian and don’t forget to electronically submit your essay and your powerpoint slide of your Great Person.
NEXT WEEK: Next week is Fall Break and then on Wednesday we’ll start exploring C.S. Lewis. We’ll start by learning about Lewis’s life and work. We’ll start reading The Screwtape Letters. The essay assignment for the week will be a third essay adventure of your own choosing — different from the one you took last time.
