General ASSIGNMENT for Week: This week's essay will be on meeting Mr. Gilbert Keith Chesterton through the adventure of Orthodoxy. Your objective in the essay is to engage Chesterton's ideas as fully as you can. You should plan to write this essay at some length and try to make your engagement tell a story. Be as personally reflective as you can when you engage his ideas. You can agree or disagree, but you should truly engage the ideas that you choose to write about. You'll need a little room and for that reason I think the proper length should be 750 to 1200 words.

Class 1 Monday November 6, 2006

1. Discussion of the Chapters IV. The Ethics of Elfland, and V. The Flag of the World.

Assignment: Carefully review the next two chapters and discover some assertions you can use as your TOSSUPS from Chapters VI. The Paradoxes of Christianity and

VII. The Eternal Revolution.

Class 2 Wednesday November 8, 2006

1. Discussion of Chapters VI. The Paradoxes of Christianity and

VII. The Eternal Revolution. Bring assertions of Chesterton to TOSSUP for discussion.

ASSIGNMENT: Carefully review the last two chapters and discover some assertions you can use as your TOSSUPS from VIII. The Romance of Orthodoxy and IX. Authority and the Adventurer.

Class 3 Friday November 10, 2006

1. Discussion of Chapters VIII. The Romance of Orthodoxy and IX. Authority and the Adventurer. We will also wrap up our discussion of Orthodoxy will a little more about Chesterton from The Everlasting Man.

2. PICKUPS: Pick up your essay on meeting and engaging Mr. Chesterton.

ASSIGNMENT: Sometime over the weekend make a list of three or four things that you think you should be doing in each of the four dimensions of PDP: 1. Intellectual Growth and Discovery, 2. Emotional Maturation and Physical Health, 3. Ethical and Spiritual Growth, and 4. Citizenship and Community Responsibility. That’s a total of between 12 and 16 points which can be raised for discussion.

NEXT WEEK: Next week will be entirely devoted to REFLECTION on the four dimensions. The Assignment for next week will be your Draft Reflective Essay.
