*Mathematical Applications for the Management, Life, and
Social Sciences* (8^{th} Edition).

**Description:**

The course covers the basics of algebra with a focus on Business Applications. The topics covered will be Chapters 0, 1, 2, 5, 3 and 4.1, 4.2 time permitting. This will cover the fundamental algebraic concepts, linear equations and their solution, quadratic functions and polynomials. Exponential, logarithmic functions and their solution will also be covered. Systems of linear equations will be solved and matrices will be introduced and used to solve systems of equations. All material will be in the context of business and the solution of business related problems.

**Attendance:**

Attendance is required and will be checked each period and excessive lateness and absenteeism may result in grade reduction or failure.

**Assignments:**

Students are expected to spend between two and three hours outside of class for each class hour (six to nine hours of outside of class study per week) working on problems in the text to augment the class material. The suggested general assignment is to work all the problems at the end of each section/chapter and check your work using the answers to the odd problems in the back of the text. If you find that you do not understand, then you should ask questions in class so that I know of your difficulty and can go over some further examples in class.

Homework is collected and graded. There will be a quiz or a test every week. The quiz questions will be similar to those at the end of the chapters. The worst one or two quiz grades will be dropped.

There will be approximately three tests during the semester and an optional final exam at the end of the semester.

**Grading:**

Quizzes and Homework will count for 20% of the grade. The rest of the grade will be computed by cluster grading the tests which sorts the grades into descending order and applies declining weights to the grades so that poor results are weighted less than good results.
