Logging Along

The idea of journaling or logging may seem odd at first, but it is used on any project of reasonable complexity to keep a record of status.  It is also useful as a tool for recovering information about personal productivity which you can use to plan your own activities or estimate scope for others.  To illustrate logging we will keep a work log of how long it takes to build the example: Coding Standard, which will be guidance for student programs.

Effort included doing web research on Coding Standards, Writing the Coding Standards page, Locating the Postman code, Updating the Code to reflect the standard, hooking everything up and trying it out.  Total time: 2 hr 26 min.

This constitutes an example of Logging and Journaling one's work.  It could have been more detailed if one wanted to get picky.  For example, I got up and answered the phone a couple of times.  I got a Diet Coke out of the refrigerator and I probably lost a few minutes here and there doing non-relevant web-searches.  But those kind of interruptions are part of a normal work environment.
