Workshop Overview

  • Interested in building a web site for your church?
  • Wanting to learn more about how to make your church's web site more effective?

This workshop, "Designing the Virtual Church Door," is organized so that both the novice and the more experienced web author can benefit from participating. We will examine what can realistically be expected from a church web site (what its mission can be) and then move to issues of effectiveness. These issues revolve around usability and accessibility concerns.

While addressing issues related to effectiveness, the workshop will focus on the practical skills involved with designing, constructing and maintaining an effective web site.

Topics to be covered include:

  1. Finding the mission for your web site
  2. Planning and designing the web site
    - discussing ice, jello and liquid design styles
    - examining other sites to learn what to do and what not to do
    - considering accessibility issues
  3. Tools that can be used to create the web site
    - webpage editors
    - graphic programs
    - web site template provided here
  4. Choosing a web hosting service
  5. Checking the site, as implemented, for usability and accessibility
  6. Going live with the site
