Guidelines for Effective Church Web Sites

After viewing a wide variety of web sites under different viewing conditions and after exploring effectiveness, usability and accessibility criteria, the following guidelines have been formulated.

If your church already has a web site online, it can be evaluated free by our staff to verify how it performs against these guidelines.

  1. Is crucial information, such as worship times and directions to the church, readily available?
  2. Can viewers easily locate how to contact the church and/or the pastor?
  3. Are the web pages kept current? Is the last date a page was changed visible to users?
  4. Can the person responsible for the web site be easily contacted by persons viewing the site?
  5. Does the site load quickly through a modem connection?
  6. Do the web pages display well in various browsers?
  7. Does the site display acceptably at various monitor resolutions?
  8. Does the first page have most of its information "above the fold," that is, does the first page display in the browser window without the user having to scroll down to see important information?
  9. Are the navigation links easily visible on each page?
  10. Is the page background clean, that is, are there no competing figures in any background graphic?
  11. Will the web pages print out such that all of the text shows up with no chopped off or missing words at the end of sentences?
  12. Are the text style and size easily readable and can a user select a larger font size, if necessary, through the browser's menus?
