The deadline for submissions is January 16, 2004.  Early submissions are welcome and requested, since by early in January scheduling of sessions should be well under way.

The goal of the conference on Modernism is to achieve a better understanding of the Modernist movement(s) by bringing together students of this era from many disciplines, points of view, and concerns.  Newcomers as well as experienced scholars are welcome to submit session proposals and/or abstracts.  We welcome not only interdisciplinary approaches but also topics in a specific discipline, e.g. Philosophy, restricted in scope to a particular period, such as the years between the two World Wars, or limited to a one region, e.g. Irish literature.

Bridgewater College is a four-year liberal arts institution, located in the Shenandoah Valley about eight miles south of Harrisonburg, VA.  Motel accommodations are readily available in Mount Crawford, VA, about three miles away, and in Harrisonburg.  Meals will be available on campus and in local restaurants; on the evening of  Friday, March 19, we will have a special Conference session with dinner, with musical entertainment during the meal.

A number of Sessions are already being planned.  These include a session with papers on modern history and literature in Virginia, a discussion of twentieth century American philosophic movements, and a presentation by Attorney Stephen J. Sfekas, who is of Counsel to Cook and DiFranco of Baltimore, on the development of American constitutional law.  Dr. John Brodie, DMA, Director of the Regimental Band at the Virginia Military Institute, and Daniel Brinson, Organist and Choir Director at Robert E. Lee Episcopal Church, Lexington, Virginia, will perform Persichetti's great Sonata for Organ and Trumpet, "The Hollow Men," based on themes from the poetry of T.S. Eliot.

This site will be updated with information about scheduled topics, speakers and events.
