The Drawing Tube is extended off the right side of the microscope.  There is a prism in the center of the tube which receives the image of the chromosomes and projects that image through the drawing tube.  When you view the chromosomes through the objective, you see them and also your pencil and drawing paper.  You then trace over what you see.  This allows you to draw chromosomes to scale.
