The Shrum Memorial Garden

The Shrum Memorial Garden, May, 2002  In addition to the specimen and "show" plants, I am slowly adding native plants. In view here are sweet williams, siberian iris, azaleas, and various evergreens planted for color contrast.  For now, the garden, including the fish pond barely visible here, supports 80 species of plants.  The view from the glass enclosure connecting the greenhouse to the main building of McKinney is breathtaking.  Click here for other views.
This garden is a gift of Dr. Richard Shrum, class of 1937,  in honor of his parents Luther Joseph and Zula Coffman, and his Uncle Harry Coffman and Aunt Della Shrum.   I designed and planted the garden  as a teaching tool, as well as for aesthetic enjoyment by the campus community.  The water feature is a gift of the Class of 1998.   The perimeter contains specimen trees, shrubs, and herbs; while the plants immediately on the pond "shoreline" are herbaceous perennials.  The pond contains a variety of aquatic plants.     I learned a great deal about forming a garden
