Bradford Pears (Rosaceae)

Bradford pears (Pyrus calleryana) are very common in our area. Unfortunately, they are very susceptible to wind damage. This can be handled by proper pruning techinques. There is a specific protocol for the pruning of these trees. The bottom pic shows the classic "Rosaceae" anatomy: the stamens, petals and sepals are all attached to the outer rim of a cup called a hypanthium. I think this picture implies how that attachment occurs. |
